Knowrish is made by Lupa Tech, LLC.
The short version
Knowrish does not collect your data. It has no account, no server, and makes no network connections. Everything you log stays in the app’s storage on your own device. We cannot see it, because there is no mechanism by which it could reach us — unless you deliberately send us a file.
If you delete the app, your data is deleted with it.
What the app stores on your device
All of this is held locally and never transmitted automatically:
- Your food log — the foods you record, the amounts, the times, and the USDA food-group equivalents and nutrient values derived from them.
- Your chosen eating pattern or food-diary mode, and what you’ve asked the app to show or hide.
- Details you enter about yourself, if you choose to: sex, birth year, height and body weight. These are optional. They exist only to suggest a calorie level and a protein goal, and the app works without them.
- Daily activity levels and workouts you record, including any energy figure you entered or brought in from Apple Health.
- Saved meals, favourites, and any foods you add yourself.
- Searches that found nothing. When you search for a food the database doesn’t contain, the app keeps that word locally so it can be improved later. You can view this list and clear it at any time under Settings ▸ Missing foods.
- Notes you write about where a goal or a body measurement came from.
Some of this is health-related information. It is treated the same way as everything else: stored on your device, never transmitted on its own.
Apple Health
If you choose to connect it, Knowrish reads one measurement from Apple Health: Active Energy Burned. It uses it for one thing — so that a workout you record can carry a real figure from your watch instead of a blank, because the app will not estimate calories it cannot source.
- It reads nothing else from Health. Not steps, not heart rate, not weight, not your medical records.
- It never writes anything to Health.
- The figure it reads stays on your device, exactly like the rest of your log.
- You are asked only at the moment you tap Connect Apple Health, never at launch, and you can refuse or revoke it at any time in Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Health. The app works without it.
The home-screen widget
If you add the widget, Knowrish keeps a small summary of the current day — your food-group counts, and calories or nutrients if you have those switched on — where the widget can read it. It stays inside the app’s own storage on your device and is never sent anywhere.
Worth knowing before you add one:
- A widget is visible to anyone who can see your screen. The two Lock Screen sizes in particular are readable without unlocking your phone, which is how iOS Lock Screen widgets work generally.
- It shows totals only — never the individual foods you logged.
- It respects the same switches as the app. If you have turned calories off, the widget doesn’t show them either.
- Removing the widget stops it. Deleting the app removes the summary with everything else.
What the app never does
- It never creates an account or asks for your name, email or phone number.
- It never contacts a server. The app works completely in aeroplane mode.
- It contains no analytics, no advertising, no trackers, and no third-party SDKs of any kind.
- It does not use the advertising identifier, and it does not track you across other apps or websites.
- It does not sell, share or disclose your information, because it never receives it.
When information does leave your device
Only when you choose to send it, and only to where you send it:
- Exporting your log. Settings ▸ Export, import & delete creates a JSON or CSV file and hands it to the standard iOS share sheet. You decide what happens next — save it to Files, email it to yourself, send it to a dietitian. The file goes wherever you direct it. It is not sent to us, and it deliberately does not include the personal details above, so a log can be shared without carrying your body weight along with it.
- Sending a missing-food report. Settings ▸ Missing foods ▸ Send report builds a plain-text list of the search words that found nothing, and hands it to the same share sheet. It contains those search words, a count, and which eating pattern was active. It contains no other part of your log. Nothing is sent unless you tap Send and choose a destination.
If you send one of these files to us, we receive what you sent, use it only to fix and improve the app, and do not combine it with anything else.
While Knowrish is in TestFlight
During beta testing, Apple’s TestFlight sits between us. This is worth stating plainly because it is the one place where we receive anything at all:
- Apple provides us with aggregate figures such as how many testers installed the build and how many sessions they had.
- Crash reports are shared with us if you have enabled crash and analytics sharing in your device settings. These describe what the app was doing when it stopped — they do not contain your food log.
- Feedback you send through TestFlight reaches us, along with whatever you include in it, plus device and OS information that Apple attaches.
- Apple’s own handling of this is covered by the Apple Privacy Policy.
None of this includes the contents of your food log.
Children
Knowrish is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. The calorie estimate deliberately refuses to produce a figure for anyone under 19, because the equations it uses apply only to adults.
Your control over your data
- See everything: your whole log is visible in the app, and exportable in full at any time.
- Correct it: any entry can be edited or deleted.
- Delete it: Settings ▸ Export, import & delete ▸ Delete all logged data clears the log. Deleting the app removes everything, including the personal details you entered.
Because we hold nothing, there is nothing for us to delete on your behalf. If you have emailed us a file and want it removed, write to us and we will delete it.
A note on the health information in the app
Knowrish tracks food-group servings against published dietary patterns. It is general information, not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for guidance from a doctor or dietitian. Nutrition figures come from public-domain US Department of Agriculture databases, and every target shown in the app carries a citation to the published source it came from.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of Knowrish adds a server, an account, AI-assisted food parsing or anything else that transmits your information, this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the change will be described here rather than made quietly. The effective date above will change.
